The 11 best hangover cures and foods

We’ve all done it. Headed out on a Sunday night for a couple of drinks with friends, that quickly turned into stumbling home at 4am on a Monday morning without any shoes. Then you’ve got to turn up to work that morning, with a pounding head, rumbling empty belly and the sad realisation you have to get through the workday… and that it will probably suck.

While unfortunately there is no magical cure (or way to turn back the clock to those last few drinks), there are some foods you can eat that will give you the best chance at kicking those nasty hangover symptoms. We’ll provide some tips on how to cure the resulting hangover, so you can work through the pain and the extremely limited sympathy of your co-workers.

What you’ll want to eat will be privy to your tastes, as well as what and how much alcohol you drank, so we’ve gathered a range of hangover cures, as well as the bare necessities.

1. Water

The elixir of life! Nothing washes down regret like water. Drinking water should be your first port of call before even thinking about food. Drinking alcohol severely dehydrates you, which means your clever body will begin drawing hydration stores from places including your brain (hello headache). This is why it’s so important to replenish the level of water in your system. Water is one of the best natural pain relievers out there, particularly after a night of alcohol consumption, so keep a bottle or glass of water handy at your desk and drink regularly throughout the day to replenish your body.

2. Toast

Carbs are an essential hangover cure, and toast is an easy source that can be found in most office kitchens. Carbohydrates are a heavier option, which will provide necessary energy to fuel your mind and body...and hungover soul. We recommend eating a simple toasted cheese sandwich, or choose smashed avocado on toast for a healthier option. If you’re in Sydney though and can’t eat smashed avo because it will negatively impact your ability to afford a house, then try banana and honey toast instead!

3. Coffee

If you love your coffee, drink up. Today is no exception. A hit of caffeine with breakfast will supplement your energy intake. Remember that caffeine also dehydrates your body, so if coffee is the way to go, then compensate with plenty of water.

4. Bacon and eggs

However you like your bacon and eggs, this greasy dish is perfect hangover food. The combination of protein and fat is both delicious and necessary to rebuilding your stamina, to survive Monday after a big weekend. Eggs are chock full of amino acids and good stuff to help with liver function, which let’s face it, you need all the help you can get after last night. Add hash browns as a side (or as the main meal to your side of bacon and eggs) and you’re good to go!

5. Pizza

Who doesn’t love a good pizza? It’s a versatile lunch option with so many flavours to choose from. Plus, you can keep those carbs coming throughout the work day to remain at the top of your game. Pepperoni, margarita, meat-lovers, vegetarian, whatever you fancy, eating a slice or two of pizza does the job.

6. Fresh fruit

While carbohydrates are important to fuel your energy reserves, you might want to add some fruit to your snack list. Eating regularly throughout the day is a vital hangover cure, and fruit is a healthy alternative to cakes, bikkies and chocolate.

7. Juice

Fruit juice is a restorative hangover cure. It’s great at any time of the day, and can be consumed as a snack or supplement to a main meal. It helps get your blood sugar levels regulated all while being a classic hangover remedy. Hand over the OJ!

8. Cakes, chocolate and munchies

Not keen on fruit, or craving something from the dark side? Any guilty pleasure like cakes and chocolates are suitable for a work day in sunnies. Pancakes for lunch anyone?

If you’re watching your calories, beware of indulging too much after all those drinks you downed. Do remember though, that a little indulgence never hurt anyone.

9. Coconut water

Coconut water is like fancy Gatorade. Full of good sugars, antioxidants and electrolytes, coconut water can rehydrate you and bring you back to the world of the living.

Not only can it be one of the best hangover cures, it has a bunch of other benefits. It can improve digestion, metabolism, prevent infections and can even help your skin (which you may need after falling asleep with your makeup on after a night drinking).

If the taste isn’t your favourite, try adding it to a smoothie instead. You still get all the great benefits, but mask the flavour and add some of that fresh fruit in that we suggested before.

10. Chicken noodle soup

Not only will you maybe get away with your co-workers thinking you’ve just come down with a cold, chicken noodle soup is an excellent hangover cure! Due to a high sodium and electrolyte content, it can help increase hydration. Plus, stocked with good carbs, maybe some veg and protein, it covers all bases.

11. Salmon

Salmon is high in antioxidants which can combat the inflammation that comes with having a hangover. You’re dehydrated, have puffy eyes and feel like a 6 out of 10. Well, salmon can help you out. Why not grab some sushi with fresh salmon and salty soy sauce. Chuck in an order of miso on the side to aid with hydration and digestion. Yum.

A combination of the recommendations we’ve made will prove the best strategy to curing that hangover. If you hydrate regularly and keep those energy levels up, you’ll have all you need to survive until 5.
